Road Safety Engineering

Vision Zero

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency have a vision for an Aotearoa where no one is killed or seriously injured on our roads.

Zero is the only acceptable number.

They aim to reduce deaths and serious injuries by 40% by 2030. Our team at Urban Connection is working on a range of initiatives for Waka Kotahi and local authorities to assist them in achieving these goals. Our team utilises the safe system approach where we aim to create a safe transport system; one that recognizes humans make mistakes and is designed so that our mistakes do not cost us our lives.

Speed Management

Speed management and safe speeds are a key element of Vision Zero. Urban Connection is a key supplier to Waka Kotahi on the Speed Management Panel delivering speed related projects from safe speed technical assessments through to implementation.

Our team is experienced at developing network wide strategies through to development of best practice speed management infrastructure interventions.

Road Safety Audits

Our team are experienced road safety auditors with experience across a wide range of audits from small scale concepts through to post construction on large scale highway projects. Our team are currently updating the Safety Audit Guidelines to have a Safe Systems approach. Our experience covers high speed motorways through to urban redevelopments and multi
modal projects.

Network and Corridor Safety Assessments

We have undertaken a range of network and corridor wide safety assessments. We have developed spatial GIS tools to assess both personal and collective risk across networks and corridors to identify and prioritise sites for treatment, and then developed intervention strategies and treatments.

Low Cost Low Risk Safety Improvements

We undertake investigation and design for low cost low risk safety improvements ranging from minor intersection improvements through to minor curve realignments and small diameter roundabouts.

Barrier Design and Audits

Our team members are accredited barrier designers as well as barrier installation, maintenance and inspection accredited.
Installation of barriers and the ongoing maintenance is a significant investment by the asset owner and needs to be installed and maintained as per the manufacturers standards to achieve the expected safety outcomes. Our team is familiar with the wide range of products available and the issues which can prevent them from working as designed.

Safety Programme Development and Evaluation

We can develop region wide or targeted safety programmes based on risk assessments to prioritise your spend and forecast crash reductions and savings.

We provide post implementation monitoring to determine the effectiveness of the solutions and to provide evidence to support on going funding applications.
