Urban Connection was engaged in 2022 to undertake in investigation of the Caroline Road / Frederick Street intersection. This included UAV surveys for traffic counts, speed measurements and driver behaviour as well as fixed camera numberplate surveys to assess the origin-destination of the intersection users. A review of the crash history and collected data informed a safety review and development of options and concept designs to address these issues. We undertook a multi-criteria analysis and SIDRA modelling to select the preferred option.

On agreement of the preferred option our team investigated options for a low cost and tactical style roundabout which could double as a trial or permanent solution. Our team undertook the detailed design, scheduling, estimating and MSQA for the construction of this roundabout. The roundabout has had very favourable feedback from road users.
A post construction UAV survey was undertaken to assess the impact of the roundabout on speeds, near misses and in particular vulnerable road user level of service and safety. This demonstrated significant improvements across the board.
